The pictures on this page will show you our dogs in "training". We use a gentle technique, with little to no E-collar work. Our methods may take a little longer but we like the results.

You will notice that in some of our pictures we have E-collars/locater on our dogs while training and hunting. We get our dogs use to the E-collar/locater in training because in Michigan the first few weeks of Grouse and Woodcock season we cannot see our dogs if they are 3 foot away from us. We run them silent and use the "point mode" which means the beeper goes off when they go on point so you can find them in the woods.

You cannot use the E-Collar while testing in NAVHDA or in NSTRA, to rely on the e-collar as your only training tool is not recommended. We do not recommend the use of it while training Braque du Bourbonnais, we have used it 2 times on KC and wished that we didn't. We have found other ways to train that take longer but we like the results better. Braque du Bourbonnais are so soft in nature, that if you use an E-collar they wrong way you could ruin your dog.

If you are planning on hunting your new companion we have to stress the training: Because of the Braque du Bourbonnais "soft" nature it is our opinion that you cannot just take them out to hunt without training. A slow introduction to both birds and guns is required.

We recommend if hunting is your main desire, do not wait until you get the puppy home contact your local chapter of NAVHDA, if you do not know where your local chapter is go to NAVHDA (see link below to find your chapter) is a wonderful club to meet with people that have more experience then you may and they are more then willing to help you with your new hunting buddy.

We also recommend 2 DVD's "Perfect Start and Perfect Finish" (see link below). These are great for people who haven't trained a great deal of dogs. They teach you how to use the E-collar the correct way and they show you different types of dogs, with different personalities at different levels from the beginning to the end of their training. You can go back and watch them again during your training, if you have questions, we just can't say enough about them.

We have assisted many other dog owner's with training and given small clinics to new people in our NAVHDA Chapter. If you choose to acquire a hunting/family companion from us (or if you don't and still have questions) we will be here to help you with training your Braque du Bourbonnais.

Working with KC steady to wing, we set a bird launcher then have "dizzied" birds around so they will fly up, simulating wild flushes. Also we keep a couple in the bag that are "wing plucked" so we can give her a retrieve or two if she does her job. We went through a lot of birds but it was definitely worth it this hunting season!

Pictures of Bear in the snow when he was 6 months old with a wing tied on a pole with fishing line getting him to point.  The other pictures are approximately at 8 months using a "tethered" wing plucked pigeon. Taking our hand starting by his rump and pushing forward will help him with his intensity while holding a point.
